Woman charged over scissors stabbing at Sydney hotel

A woman has been charged with attempted murder after allegedly stabbing her co-worker with a pair of scissors behind the reception area of a luxury hotel.

Police and ambulance crews were called to the Intercontinental Hotel in Sydney after staff called to report an assault on a fellow employee about 2.20am (local time) on Saturday.

A 30-year-old woman was found with multiple stab wounds to her upper body in a back-office area behind reception at the Macquarie Street hotel.

Sydney City Police Area Command Chief Inspector Gary Coffey said the motive behind the attack remained unclear, but he confirmed it appeared to be frenzied in nature.

"At this stage, we're unable to confirm the exact motive for this crime other than all three persons involved in this incident are co-workers," he told reporters on Saturday.

"You'd have to think there was some sort of dispute this morning in the work environment."

Coffey said a 27-year-old woman was also injured when she tried to intervene in the altercation.

"We have to pay tribute to the co-workers who intervened because the situation could have been a lot worse than what it is," he said.

The injured women were both taken to St Vincent's Hospital where the 30-year-old was expected to undergo surgery on Saturday afternoon.

Meanwhile, police charged a 31-year-old woman with causing wounding/grievous bodily harm to a person with the intent to murder, and assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

She was refused bail to appear before Parramatta Local Court on Sunday.
