A man had been charged with arson after a church fire in Auckland's Avondale last week.
The fire, at St Mary’s Church on Great North Road, was being investigated by police since it broke out at around 4.20am on July 14.
There were no injuries, but the building sustained "serious damage", according to police.

This morning, Detective Senior Sergeant Rebecca Kirk said police had arrested a 42-year-old man at a property in New Lynn last night.
He was charged with arson and would appear in the Auckland District Court today.
“This is a great result and I would like to acknowledge the assistance received by Police from members of the public in relation to this investigation,” Kirk said.
