Local distilleries vie for top prize as NZ Spirit Awards kick off

Hundreds of New Zealand distilleries are vying for top honours at the Spirit Awards in Wellington this week, as the industry continues with rapid expansion.

Nearly 600 spirits are being judged by more than 20 industry experts, with entries from 170 distilleries — a 530% increase from the 27 operating in 2018.

David Hawk, head judge convener, said the growth had spread to all corners.

"We're seeing distilleries pop up in Stewart Island and in Bluff and the Far North, and what a lot of our distillers are doing is finding local botanicals, flavouring agents from their neighbourhoods," he said.

Consumption of spirits in New Zealand has been growing year on year since 2021, with overseas markets increasingly wanting Kiwi-made products too.

"We're exporting more than we ever have," Hawk said.

Wellington's Southward Distillery in Lyall Bay was among those seeking recognition.

Owner Frankie McPhail said her company was creating unique products while using different wood varieties.

"We're creating really beautiful ryes and bourbon-style-whiskeys, but we're doing them in cognac barrels and rye barrels and pinot barrels, so really bringing those flavours through in the wood that we're using," she said.

Spirit makers have capitalised on changing consumer preferences, with Kiwis drinking less alcohol overall but seeking premium products, according to industry representatives.

McPhail said customers were increasingly willing to spend more on unique experiences.

"People are out there instead of buying their standard, they're looking, 'hey I'm going to be spending my money, so I want to spend it on something unique and special and you know something that I haven't had before'," she said.
