Fears man swept away after car crashed into Whanganui River

It's now feared a man reported missing was "swept away" after his car crashed into the Whanganui River last week, police say.

The man, 20-year-old Kahukura Dilpreet Wati Woods Gill, also known as Kahu, was last seen on Friday, June 27.

Police said a car matching the description of one owned by Kahu was found in the river on July 2.

"The police national dive squad was deployed and confirmed that Kahu was not in the car, which has since been recovered from the river.

"Tragically we believe it is likely Kahu was in the car when it crashed into the river.

"The river was flooded at the time and we believe Kahu may have been swept away."

As part of ongoing search efforts, an aerial search is planned for tomorrow, police added.

It also appealed for any reports of clothing being found near the river or coastline, which match the description of the clothes Kahu was wearing when he was last seen.

The clothes are a black hoodie with red text on the sleeves, and camo cargo pants.

Reports can be made to police via 105 or online.
