Police are appealing to the public for information after a man in his 70s was stabbed in a "cowardly and unprovoked attack" in Auckland's Papakura last month.
Counties Manukau South CIB Detective Senior Sergeant Simon Taylor said the wounding occurred on May 16 on Settlement Rd in Papakura shortly before midday.

"A man in his 70s was walking alone in a westerly direction at the time, outside Papakura Intermediate School," he said.
“Around the same time a person was walking on the opposite side of the road heading in the other direction.
Taylor said the person then crossed the road towards the victim, for reasons unknown to officers.

"They have approached the victim and lunged towards him, making contact.
"Immediately after the offender fled the scene, and the victim realised he had suffered a stab wound.
The man required hospital treatment, and was "recovering from this cowardly and unprovoked attack".

Police urged anyone who recognised the person in the mages released today to get in touch.
"People in the community will know who this person is and they need to do the right thing and speak up," Taylor said.
