Sparks fly for Irish comedian on First Dates Valentine's Special

On the eve of Valentine's Day, First Dates Ireland aired a Valentine’s Special celebrating love in its many forms.

In this episode, TV presenter and 'no filter’ comedian Bláithín from Dublin meets fellow Gaeilgeoir and ‘proud culchie’ Mary from Killarney. But will the two have more in common than their red hair?

While Bláithín jokingly describes herself as a "10 and 0 all at once", she says her type varies when it comes to dating men or women.

"I like men that are so tall that people worry about me when they see me walking down the street with them," she deadpans. "They're like, 'is she being kidnapped?'"

When it comes to women, though, she likes "all of them".

Despite this, the 33-year-old has never been on a date with a woman and is nervous to see who she is ultimately paired up with.

"I am very nervous about going on a blind date, especially because I have a sneaking suspicion that I've dated every single man in Dublin."

Thankfully, the match-makers paired Bláithín with a fresh face: 25-year-old Mary, a Kerry woman looking to date outside her bubble of GAA heads and 'culchies'.

"I've been in a few situationships and one long-term relationship, and have only been in relationships with men" she told producers, explaining that she was hoping to broaden her dating pool.

Borrowing a line from Schitt's Creek, she explains her demisexuality with the phrase: "I like the wine, not the label."

Happily, the two Gaeilgeoirs clicked immediately on their date, sharing a cúpla focal over cocktails, trying out French over mains, and ending with some Irish Sign Language over dessert.

"I speak five languages," says Mary. "Irish, English, French, Russian, and Sign Language."

"I think it's an attractive quality to speak a lot of languages," admits Bláithín.

From dating histories to an ADHD diagnosis, the pair had plenty to talk about while they (bravely) dined out on oysters for their Valentine-themed meal.

Eventually, though, it was time for the big question: Do you want to see each other again?

Tá, yes, oui, da - a resounding yes from both, in whichever language they choose.
