Slain Melbourne gangland figure survived other attempts on his life

A former bikie and high-profile gangland figure had survived attempts on his life before being shot dead in front of his girlfriend in a daylight killing.

Sam "The Punisher" Abdulrahim was gunned down as he walked to his car with a woman in a car park on High Street at Preston in Melbourne's north about 10.30am on Tuesday.

He died at the scene after attempts at first aid by the woman, who police believe is his girlfriend, police and paramedics.

But it wasn't his first brush with death, having survived a number of other attempts on his life.
