Podcasts to keep the kids educated and entertained

None of us are strangers to the world of podcasting anymore. In Ireland, almost half of all adults surveyed admitted to having listened to one in the past month. We're second only to South Korea in our consumption.

Stories to entertain

We’ve made a number of dramas over the years but here you’ll find something for each age group.

0-6

The Neighbourhood

No one knows their neighbourhood better than the animals and children. This neighbourhood is a leafy suburb with red brick houses and gardens of every sort, but it is also a place without boundaries. Golden Globe and Oscar nominee Ciarán Hinds is our trust narrator who gives us stories about kindness and bravery children find in themselves. Belonging is never simply about being like others. "We've all grown up and moved away," the narrator tells us, "perhaps you live there now." Written by the playwright Philip Davison. A new series launched in June.

Maddie and Triggs

A vision-impaired seven-year-old girl and her pet dog listen to the world around them and create musical adventures from the sounds of everyday life. A zany audio cartoon that will delight younger classes.

7-12

Cereal

A television talent show begins to fall apart as cheating and deception are revealed. It's down to one kid and his podcast to uncover the truth behind the crunchy crimes. For families who need a true crime fix for all ages. A whodunnit for the ages. This one is best for 3rd to 6th class.

Nero's Class

In Mrunglody, folklore is reality, magic is in the air, and the school is a treehouse because their old one was blocking a Fairy Path...obviously!

A soggy Professor Nero awakens on a mysterious beach, with no memory of how he ended up there. Has he been shipwrecked? Thrown overboard by pirates? Kidnapped by cannibals? Or is the truth far more sinister than any of that?

Featuring original music, special guests, and an altogether brand new take on Irish folklore - it is great fun for kids and bigger kids from 6-12 years old.

The Adventures of a Young Pirate Queen

Recently awarded silver at the New York Radio Festival these are the continuing adventures of a fictional teenage Grainne Mhaol. A mix of fantasy and history that answers the question of how Grainne, a west of Ireland girl raised to be a member of the nobility became one of Ireland's most legendary pirates with a fleet rumoured to have been bigger than the English Armada of the time. Each episode is between 7-10 minutes long.

Science and the wider world

Just some of our programmes that could be helpful starting points in Media, STEM and Green Schools initiatives.

Ecolution

We’re now on series three of our double IMRO award-winning podcast for children who worry about the climate crisis and want to act. From our oceans to Ireland’s native animals, precious wetlands to the economy and how we are shaping the world, the new series will cover a multitude. And we’d love to hear from you and your students about what actions you’re taking. Or if you’d like to be a part of our Braintrust; Kids sharing their feelings and actions with the wider community. Stop the Bus

Stop the Bus pulls into the stop inviting children to hop on board, spin the wheel and choose a letter at random. Every letter offers a window into people, places and things that can start conversations in the classroom beyond the podcast, as well as allowing children from Senior Infants up to hear the letters come to life.

Movies are Magic

A film podcast for kids who love to watch and make movies. Behind-the-scenes interviews with the people who make films and even a step-by-step guide on how to get started. Ideal for media-savvy students.

The Nature of Things

An exciting, and fun-filled series that encourages children to indulge their natural curiosity about science (the natural world, environment, and more) and ask questions about the nature of things.

That's Animal

Zookeeper Brendan Walsh takes some lucky kids behind the scenes at Dublin Zoo to meet the animals and the people that mind them.

Here we collect the best of our non-music radio output but it might be of most interest as each Friday we publish the Big Kid’s Quiz, a 15-minute general knowledge quiz that encourages listeners to get out their pencils and test their mettle.
