How to keep pets safe during Storm Éowyn

Significant and widespread power outages, structural damage and event cancellations are expected in Ireland, with Storm Éowyn forecast to bring "extreme, damaging and destructive gusts in excess of 130km/h".

Several Status Red warnings for wind spanning the entire country have been issued from the early hours of tomorrow morning. For more information, click here.

With strong winds and heavy rain predicted, the team at Petmania are sharing tips for preparing pets for the incoming storm with simple but effective measures.

Create a Safe Haven Indoors

Storms can be overwhelming for pets due to loud noises and changes in pressure. Designate a quiet, secure spot in your home where your pet can feel safe and shielded from the outside chaos. Use familiar bedding, toys, and even calming sprays or pheromone diffusers. If possible, set up the space away from windows or areas where the wind might sound loudest.

Plan for Bathroom Breaks

Dogs still need their walks and bathroom breaks, but it’s essential to do so safely. Take them out well before the storm hits and keep these outings brief. Use a secure leash or harness to prevent any escapes, particularly if sudden gusts of wind or noises frighten them.

NB: Several Status Red warnings have been issued from the early hours of tomorrow morning. A Status Orange warning for wind is also in place for the country from midnight until 4pm tomorrow, while a Status Yellow warning for rain has also been issued for Cork, Kerry, Waterford and Wexford, with heavy rain forecast from 9pm tonight, bringing localised flooding. Avoid Outdoor Risks

During the storm, keep all pets—dogs, cats, and even farm animals—indoors. Flying debris, flooding, and extreme weather conditions can pose serious dangers. If you must take your pet outside, ensure they are supervised and only for essential reasons.

Secure Pet Housing

If you have outdoor pets, such as rabbits, guinea pigs, or birds, move their enclosures indoors or to a sheltered area. Check that they are dry, warm, and protected from drafts. Add extra bedding or insulation for comfort and warmth.

Stay Calm

Pets are highly attuned to their owners’ emotions and may react to your stress or anxiety. Stay calm and speak to your pet in a soothing tone. If possible, engage them with games, gentle grooming, or other activities to distract them from the storm.

Emergency Kit Essentials:

  • A supply of pet food and clean water (enough for three days).
  • Blankets or towels to keep them warm.
  • Any required medications.
  • A leash, harness, and travel carrier in case of evacuation.
  • Updated identification on their collar and microchip.
